Drill Presses
Floor drill pressesare ideal for drilling through thick metal workpieces with larger diameter holes than bench drill presses. These stationary machines offer a long spindle travel and are used to rotate & drive downwards the vertical bits held in a drill head for making holes in workpieces. The floor drill presses also have a worktable below the drill head for supporting workpieces & maintaining consistent alignment while creating precise holes. These drill presses are ideal for drilling, reaming, counterboring and tapping of diverse sized holes. They are equipped with an oversize drill head with widely spaced bearings for smooth operation, decreased vibrations and less noise. These floor type drill presses feature a rack and pinion table raiser for quick set-ups, installation & operator convenience and a work light for illumination over the selected workpiece / work area for operator safety. Selected models of these floor drill presses may include step pulley and belt drive design for controlling speeds of drilling.
Floor radial drill presseson the other hand feature a drilling head that is mounted on the arm extending out of the support column. These drilling heads move up & down with the arm to accommodate wide workpieces.
Bench drill presseshave a compact size and are mounted to a work surface to save floor space. They feature shorter spindle travel than floor-stand drill presses and are therefore able to create holes in thinner metal workpieces.
Geared head drill pressesare the ideal choice for repetitive drilling of medium to heavy duty large holes. These geared drill presses are operated using helical / hardened gears for smooth and quiet operation.
Uses
Drill press machines are used to drill & create holes in metal or wooden pieces in manufacturing, metal fabrication and retrofitting industries.
Features
- Drill presses are used for drilling, reaming, counterboring and tapping of holes in wooden or metal surfaces.
- They generally have an electrical motor that rotates the attached belt & spindles.
- The rotation of these spindles in turn rotates the drill bits that drill out diverse shaped & sized holes.
- These drill presses are equipped with hand wheels or electronic controls for moving the drill bits up & down to form holes of varying depths.
- Bench drill press machines are used for machining small diameter holes; installed on benches, tables & worktables.
- Floor Drill Presses can be installed upright on the floor for drilling medium to large sized straight holes.
- A floor drill press provides more drilling capacity as compared to a bench drill machine due to its more powerful motor.
- Radial type drill presses have a radial arm to move the drilling head horizontally for adjusting the position of the drill bit above the desired location of the workpiece.
- These radial drill presses also allow drilling of holes at desired inclination & angles with respect to the normal vertical position.
- Geared head drill presses use steel or reinforced fibre gears for driving the drill instead of belts.
- Mill drill machines combine the design & functionality of a drill press with a milling machine; can both drill holes and remove drilled out material from the surface of a workpiece.
- Selected models have direct drive motors instead of belt drive motors for delivering more power & increasing efficiency.
Working Mechanism
After the electric power is provided to the motor, the attached stepped pulley starts rotating. The spindle pulley rotation causes the belt / V belt attached to it to rotate. On the other end of the belt, one more stepped pulley is attached in inverted form to increase or decrease the speed of the rotational motion. Rotation of the second pulley allows the rotation of a spindle & chuck. Different types of drill bits are fitted on the spindle & chuck for drilling according to the desired shape, size & depth of holes and material of the workpiece. A hand-wheel or electronic control moves the spindle up and down in the vertical direction to give the necessary amount of feed to the workpiece. Selected models of radial drilling machines are equipped with a hand wheel featuring rack & pinion drive mechanism to rotate pinion and convert their rotary motion to linear motion for accommodating diverse sized workpieces.
Standards and Approvals
Dake Corporation drill press machines are fitted with CE approved electronics for user safety & health. Jet Tools drill press machines are CSA certified for user safety, superior performance & environmental health.
Frequently Asked Questions
What to do in case of drill press failure?
Assuming that the selected drill press is supplied with the correct power supply and is the correct choice for the desired hole size, the first thing to check is the status of the wiring connections. Users should also check & clean dirt or dust accumulated on the motor causing heating up of the motor. Motors, step pulley & belt drive should also be lubricated regularly for smooth operation. Users should take care that they do not run the drilling machines in a workpiece not suitable for drilling according to the product's operating manual. They should also check for wear & tear on the drill press parts.
How can users select the right drill press for their needs?
Firstly, the users should measure the electrical supply specifications required for powering the drill press. Depending upon the workpiece & material thickness, the required output power of the drill press should be calculated. The customers should take note of the construction, type of motor used and the chuck size available before buying the unit. The safety and controlling mechanisms should also be paid attention to while selecting the right drill press. The location of the applications also matters a lot while choosing the correct drill press.
What other variants of drill presses are supplied by Raptor Supplies?
Raptor Supplies offers various variants of drill presses, such as milling and drilling machines, magnetic drill presses and handheld electric drills. Magnetic drill presses are also known as mag drills, feature a magnetic base for sticking to ferrous metal surfaces & holding the drills in position while making holes in structural steel, I-beams, pipes and other metal workpieces. Milling & drilling machines are used to both drill out holes in workpieces and remove the extruded material from those holes. Handheld electric drills are ideal for creating holes in any position. They can fit in compact spaces due to their small size. These handheld drills can be of two types: corded and cordless. The corded variant can be used for a long time while maintaining constant power while the cordless variant operates in locations without electrical power access and eliminates the tripping hazard of a cord.
What accessories are compatible with the bench drill presses?
Raptor Supplies can deliver a wide range of accessories that fit into the bench drill presses and other types of drill presses to provide ease of use & safe operation. Drill bits of different shapes, sizes are used to cut different types of holes on a workpiece. Drill press guards & protection plates offer protection to drill press operators against injuries by providing a barrier near the bit to deflect chips and debris. We also supply replacement parts like motors, shaft arbours, chucks, belts & drill bits for replacing faulty or worn out parts of a bench drill press.
