Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. How often should emergency shower & eyewash stations be tested?
A. Users should run these emergency, shower & eyewash units weekly for testing the water flow. Full inspection may be done periodically or annually according to local safety standards & guidelines.
Q. What are the points to be noted while installing emergency shower & eyewash stations?
- A.
- Users should install the shower & eyewash stations in a well-lit location with a highly visible sign. The path towards these stations must be obstruction free to save time & prevent accidents.
- They must be located within 10 seconds from a hazardous application and immediately adjacent to the hazards involving strong acids or caustics.
- The units should start supplying water within one second after actuation. The supplied water should have a tepid temperature ranging from 16 to 38 degrees C (60 to 100 degrees F).
Q. What steps should workers follow if they are exposed to hazardous chemicals?
- A.
- Use an emergency shower or eyewash immediately if your skin or eyes are exposed to hazardous chemicals or irritants. Delayed washing may result in irreparable tissue or eye damage.
- In case of exposure to the eyes, flush the eyes for a minimum of 15 minutes. The eyes should be kept open and rotated in all directions for removing contamination thoroughly.
- In case of exposure to the skin, flush the exposed body part with a large quantity of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. The user / worker should remove contaminated clothing, jewellery, and shoes for a thorough cleaning.
