WILCOM Optical Fiber Identifier

Wilcom optical fibre identifiers are installation and maintenance instruments designed to identify optical fibres by detecting the optical signals transmitted through a fibre. By using local detection technology, these units eliminate the need to open the fibre at the splice point for identific...ation and the risk of interrupting service.Read more

Features

  • These fibre identifiers detect low-frequency tones at 270, 1000 and 2000 hertz. If traffic is present on the fibre under test, an audible tone can be heard as well as the traffic direction, indicated by LEDs illuminating on the probe.
  • Model 30612197-02 ribbon fibre identifier includes three easy-to-use field changeable adapter heads. Two of these adapter heads are used for verifying signal presence / absence (live or dark fibre) on ribbon fibre.
  • By utilising InGaAs detectors, this unit can be used on single and multi-mode applications (jacketed or not jacketed) with wavelengths ranging from 850 to 1310 nanometres (nm).
  • All models feature an easy-to-use thumb lock that enables / disable hands-free operation.
  • They come integrated with an LED indicator that indicates tone detection, traffic presence, traffic direction and low battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is optical fibre?

Optical fibre is a data transmission method that transfers data signals in the form of light and travels hundreds of miles significantly faster than traditional electrical cables. It is ideal for high-performance data networking and telecommunication services like the internet, television, and telephones.

How to verify optical splices and connectors?

  • Attach the Wilcom OFI (optical fibre identifier) to one side of the optical connector / splice.
  • Read and record the relative optical power. Repeat the measurement on the second side of the connector / splice.
  • Take the difference between the reading on the second side and the first side.
  • The difference must be roughly equal to the optical attenuation of the optical connector or splice.
  • Take the measurement several times and derive an average to improve accuracy.

What is local detection technology?

The non-destructive macro-bend detection technology helps to eliminate the opening of the fibre without damaging or overstressing it. This bending technique offers the detection and the direction of light.
