- These air / water hose reels are spring-return reels, also called self-retracting, spring-driven or spring-rewind hose reels, as they retract the hose onto the reel without an external power source.

These units include a locking ratchet and pawl that locks into place once the hose has been pulled to the desired length. By pulling the hose out, the ratchet is released and the hose can then be rewound onto the reel.
