GENERAL ELECTRIC TFJ Frame Circuit Breaker
General Electric moulded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) are designed to prevent electrical damage to connected devices due to excess current or short circuits. These GE TFJ breakers are used in the manufacturing, automobile and construction industries.

Working Mechanism
- The circuit breaker has a bimetallic strip and an electromagnet to protect from both shortcircuit and overcurrent conditions.
- When a constant current is flowing through the conductor, the bimetallic strip gets heated and bends.
- In such conditions, the mechanical latch (in the circuit breaker) opens the contacts and interrupts the flow of current.
- During short circuit conditions current rises suddenly, which causes the electromagnet displacement of the plunger in the solenoid or tripping coil.
- The plunger hits the trip lever and activates the latch mechanism, causing the contacts to open and interrupt the current flow.
Features
- They have moulded case construction that provides protection against mechanical damage.
- These circuit breakers are equipped with a 2-pole configuration for controlling multiple connections simultaneously.
- They feature load-side lug terminals for easy connection on panels.
- These GE TFJ breakers have an interrupt rating of 22kA@480V.
- They can withstand temperatures up to 40 degrees C and are available in currents ratings ranging from 150 to 225A.
- These circuit breakers further feature thermal magnetic trip units for long-time and instantaneous current overload protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my General Electric moulded case circuit breaker needs to be replaced?
These MCCBs need to be replaced if frequent tripping, visible damage, a burning odour or failure to reset after being tripped are noticed. Moreover, if the switch is outdated or no longer meets the latest electrical codes & standards, it may also need to be replaced.
What is the function of moulded cases?
Moulded cases hold current-carrying components, trip devices and mechanisms integrated into one unit.
What are the reasons for the frequent tripping of these circuit breakers?
Major reasons include circuit overloading, short-circuiting, ground fault surges, defective circuit breaker or an arc fault.
What are the factors to consider while choosing suitable General Electric moulded case circuit breakers?
- Current & voltage ratings
- Trip characteristics
- Interrupt capacity
- Load size
- Environmental conditions
