Working Mechanism

  • These HFD Series moulded case switches consist of circuit breakers that incorporate both fixed thermal and magnetic trips.

  • Fixed Thermal Trips

    • Fixed thermal trips are based on the heat generated by the current passing through the circuit.
    • The trip unit contains a bimetallic strip sensitive to temperature changes.
    • As the current increases, the bimetallic strip heats up and bends, triggering the breaker to trip.

    Fixed Magnetic Trips

    • Fixed magnetic trips use the strength of the magnetic field created by the current passing through the circuit.
    • The trip unit contains an electromagnet sensitive to changes in magnetic field strength.
    • As the current increases, the magnetic field strength increases and when it reaches a certain level, it triggers the breaker to trip.

Standards and Approvals

  • UL

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pole configuration of these switches?

Eaton offers these HFD Series switches in two, three & four-pole variants.

How to ensure the optimum working of these switches?

Eaton switches have a PUSH-TO-TRIP button to check their tripping function. This button should be used periodically to exercise the operating mechanism of the switches.

How to reset these switches?

Turn the circuit breaker handle to the extreme Off position to reset the switch. If the switch's thermal unit has tripped, wait till it cools down before turning the handle.

How do I select the right thermal-magnetic circuit breaker for my application?

The selection of a moulded case switch depends on the specific requirements of the electrical system, including the voltage & current ratings, trip curve characteristics and any other special features or requirements.
