Working Mechanism
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) change the supplied alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC) and again into AC power at a different frequency by adjusting a connected inverter's switching rate.
- Increasing the frequency increases the motor's speed and vice versa.

Why is a variable frequency drive required for a permanent magnet AC motor?
Permanent magnet motors reach full speed / torque almost immediately after actuation. The shock load by a normal power supply can often damage the connected mechanical components. The voltage supplied must be controlled. The VFDs play a big role here by matching motors with their respective power supply. However, users should not run more than 1 motor on a single variable frequency drive (VFD).
