Working Mechanism
- They use a combination of a bimetallic strip and an electromagnetic trip mechanism to protect against overloads, short circuits and ground faults.
- When the current flowing through the circuit breaker exceeds the rated current, the bimetallic strip heats up and bends, causing the tripping mechanism to activate and disconnect the circuit.
- The magnetic protection mechanism consists of an electromagnetic trip device that detects high levels of current caused by a short circuit.
- The trip device is equipped with a coil that generates a magnetic field when the current exceeds a predetermined level.
- This magnetic field causes a plunger to move and trip the circuit breaker, thereby disconnecting the circuit.
Features
- They offer fixed thermal and fixed magnetic trip units to provide overcurrent and short circuits in electrical systems.
- Their three-pole design provides an interrupting rating of 65kA at 240VAC and 14kA at 480VAC, respectively
- They offer a compact design that minimises panel sizing and are enclosed in durable moulded cases to prevent vibrations and mechanical stresses.
Standards and Approvals
- UL
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fixed and adjustable trip units?
- Fixed trip units have a pre-set tripping current rating and cannot be adjusted, therefore the switch automatically trips when the current in the circuit exceeds the pre-set value. They are typically used in applications where the circuit conditions are stable and where the load does not vary significantly over time.
- Adjustable trip units, on the other hand, allow the tripping current rating to be adjusted according to the specific current rating, providing greater flexibility. They are used in applications where the load is subjected to variation over time and provide more precise control over the tripping current when required.
What is the maximum current rating of these switches?
Eaton switches have a maximum current rating of 100
Can these Eaton GD Series moulded case switches be reset manually after tripping?
Users can reset these switches manually after they trip, allowing the circuit to be re-energised once the fault has been cleared.
