Working Mechanism
- The starter is equipped with a set of contacts that control the flow of electricity to the motor.
- When the operator or the control system initiates the start command, the contacts (that are normally open) switch to a closed position, allowing the power supply to the motor.
- The motor now begins to run.
- On initiating the stop command, the contacts return to their original position and disconnect the power, which causes the motor to stop operating.
- The starter is also incorporated with thermal overload protection, which monitors the current flowing to the motor.
- If the current exceeds the pre-set limit, the thermal overload protection will trip and open the contacts, thereby disconnecting the power to the motor.

Non-reversing starters control starting, stopping and protection of a three-phase AC motor. They are only designed to allow the motor to move in one direction and cannot reverse the direction.

A contactor is used for making and breaking the connection between the power source and the motor, while the overload relay offers protection against overheating caused by the overloading of the motor.
