Thread inserts are suitable for installing threaded fasteners in soft materials, thin materials or materials with a stripped & threaded hole. They are ideal for automobile, aerospace and maintenance applications. Raptor Supplies offers these thread inserts from brands like Grainger, Chrislynn, Helicoil, E-Z Lok & Walter. They provide more strength, versatility & resilient operation than traditional threaded holes.
Features
- Thread inserts are ideal for creating strong internal threading on various materials like metals, polymers, wood & composites.
- They offer a strong connection to the fastener while preventing wear, corrosion or over-torque.
- Helical threaded inserts may have a tang / prong at the end of the insert for ease of installation.
- The thread inserts are made of stainless steel, steel or brass and are available in various thread sizes, such as UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF, BSP, NPT, Imperial & Metric.
- Raptor Supplies also offers Grainger power drivers for installing these inserts.
- These E-Z Press inserts are ideal for post-moulding installation in thermoset plastics & thermoplastics.
- They have a slotted design with a diamond-knurled outer surface for cold installation and optimum torque & pull-out resistance. This eliminates the requirement to chase the threads after the moulding operation.
- These press inserts press into the material after installation using a rubber mallet or an arbour press and are available in flush or flanged variants.
- These free-running inserts are made of stainless steel for outdoor applications.
- They are DFARS compliant and may adhere to military or aerospace specifications when required.
- These Metric threading inserts are available in lengths ranging from 3 to 36 mm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are some thread inserts larger in diameter than the tapped hole before installation?
Selected thread inserts have a slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the tapped hole before installation, as the installation tool decreases the leading coil's diameter when it applies torque to the insert's prong / tang for easy installation. Once the threaded insert is installed, it acts like a spring and expands outward onto the material for strong anchoring.
How to choose the length of a helical insert?
The helical insert length should be at least as long as the desired screw diameter. Users may also choose inserts having longer lengths for increased strength. The exact insert length can vary depending upon the application & the material being installed into the insert. Materials like steel do not need long inserts. In contrast, for soft materials like aluminium, a longer insert is preferred.
How to install a helical thread insert?
- Drill a hole according to the length of the insert / screw / bolt using the suggested drill bit size.
- Thread the drilled hole using a tap (sold separately), then wind the insert into the hole using an installation tool.
- Use a prong break-off tool or punch to remove the prong and allow free passage of the fastener.
How to install a key-locking thread insert?
- Drill a hole according to the required application.
- Tap the drilled hole, then wind the insert into the hole.
- Drive the key into the material using the installation tool & hammer.
Can thread inserts be removed once installed?
Yes, some thread inserts can be removed using removal tools that attach to them & unwind them in the direction opposite to that used during installation.
