Tap Bolts
Tap bolts are used for repairing automotive equipment and attaching motors to machines & pulleys for adjusting the belt tension. They are employed in tapped and drilled holes instead of studs and nuts.
Features
- Tap bolts, also known as hex tap bolts or fully threaded hex bolts, feature hex heads and an underhead washer-bearing surface.
- These bolts are intended to be inserted through holes in assembled parts and tightened with a nut, or mated with an internally threaded (tapped) hole and tightened with the bolt's head.
- Tap bolts are always completely threaded and have right-hand UNC threads, allowing them to accommodate a wide range of material thicknesses.
- After tightening, the tap bolt should be long enough to allow at least two full threads to extend beyond the nut face, ensuring full thread engagement with the nut.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are hex bolts?
Hex bolts are bolts with external threading and a hex head. They are designed to be driven by a wrench. Hex bolts may be partly threaded or completely threaded, and are available in hex cap & hex tap variants. They are inserted into holes with machined & tapped threads, and are available in coarse thread (UNC) and fine thread (UNF) options.
What is the difference between a cap screw and a bolt?
The most fundamental distinction between a cap screw and a bolt is how these fasteners are installed. A bolt is installed by turning a nut to tighten the fastener, whereas a cap screw is assembled and tightened by turning the head of the bolt.
What do we call a bolt without a head?
Double-ended bolts, also known as stud bolts, have a threaded portion on each end of the bolt rather than a traditional head. One end is threaded to fit into a suitable hole that has been tapped with a mated thread, while the other protrudes and is threaded to hold a nut.
What do we call a screw without a point?
Machine screws do not have a pointed edge and are designed to be used in holes that are already tapped or have a nut. They are threaded all the way through the shaft.
