Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a hinged plate fastener and a solid plate fastener?
- Hinged plate fasteners are installed into each end of the belt and then joined together and held in place with a pin. They are typically used with small pulleys in a conveyor system.
- Solid plate fasteners, on the other hand, consist of one plate that is installed into both ends of the belt and fastened together. They are used with larger pulleys and other applications that require sift-free splice.
Is it necessary to skive a belt before installation?
Skiving is a process in which a portion of the belt's top cover is removed to simplify fastener installation. By doing so, the installed fasteners create a strong grip on the belt carcass. It also reduces the chance of the fasteners interfering with any of the belt components or conveyor structure.
How to install Alligator lacing?
- Square belt ends, then cut using the Alligator 300 Series belt cutter.
- Position clips on lacing and gently insert the gauge pin.
- Keep the bar side up and centre lacing on the belt, holding it against the gauge pin.
- Using a soft wood surface for support, hammer end teeth halfway into the top of the belt.
- Turn the belt over and hammer lacing halfway into the bottom of the belt.
- Using a hard steel plate, hammer again from the top until teeth are flush with the belt surface.
- Repeat the same process on the bottom of the belt.
- Lastly, repeat the whole process for the other end of the belt, then insert a hinge pin and notch belt to secure the lacing.
