Thern Competitive Advantages

Liberty Series Capstan Winches

Thern Liberty Series capstan winches feature a swivel base for securely lifting, pulling & tensioning at any angle using an optional hitch mount. Users just have to position their truck once, then rotate the winch to lift / pull the load before locking it down. They are suitable for energy-related applications in remote locations like pole settings, maintaining wind turbines, stringing lines & erecting cell towers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between a hoist and a winch?

Hoists are pulling devices that lift loads vertically using a wire rope or chain. Thern winches, on the other hand, can pull loads both horizontally & vertically when placed in floor-mounted, wall-mounted or underhung orientation. Hoists also need an automatic brake in vertical lifting applications to prevent accidents whereas winches that are used for horizontal pulls do not require a brake.

What is the difference between electric winches and manual winches?

Hand winches require manual turning of the winch handle by the user. Electric winches use an electric motor to turn the drum containing wire rope and spool the lifting rope.

Which type of winding should be done on wire ropes of Thern winches?

Choosing of underwounding versus overwounding of a wire rope depends on the Thern winch being selected or more specifically the brake incorporated into the winch. Hand winches mostly come with disc brakes that hold the load in only one direction. Winding the wire rope incorrectly may cause the winch to operate against the brake. This may lead to brake failure, resulting in the load falling or causing injury.
